6 Things to Delete From Your Life in 2026 If You Want to Get Far in Life

Every New Year, we sit down with ourselves

and review everything we have been through,

including the mistakes that held us back.

Then we decide to make new changes, only for these changes

to have little to no effect on our lives.

The cycle continues every year, and our lives become more miserable.

We don’t achieve our goals or build the relationships we desire.

But if you tried any of these, I am proud of you.

Trying is good, but working on what is right is very important.

If you are deleting things randomly every year,

you might be pulling yourself back instead of pushing yourself forward.

Let me save you some time.

Here are the 6 things to delete from your life that are holding you back:

1. Toxic Positivity

Yes, I mean it. Many people push toxic positivity

as a New Year’s resolution, but it holds you back.

The idea that you should always be positive and happy is just lame.

You are a human, not a robot.

“Good vibes only” is keeping you stuck.

Sometimes things actually suck.

Sometimes you need to feel angry or disappointed to make a change.

Stop pretending everything’s fine when it’s not.

  • Delete: Forcing fake happiness.
  • Keep: Real emotions that push you forward.

Accept every emotion; it is a part of you,

but never let it control your life.

2. People Who Drain You

You know exactly who we’re talking about.

  • The friend who only calls when they need something.
  • The person who shoots down every idea you have.
  • The one who makes you feel exhausted after every conversation.

You’re not being mean by setting boundaries; you’re being smart.

Life’s too short to carry dead weight.

Be strict with your boundaries and stand firm on them.

Never let anyone play you.

3. The Need to Explain Yourself

Going to bed early? You don’t owe anyone an explanation.

Skipping the party? Don’t need a reason. Changing careers?

Not up for debate.

Confident people don’t justify their choices to everyone.

Delete the urge to defend decisions that are right for YOU.

Learn to say “No” without explaining yourself too much.

Other things require your explanation, but not everything.

4. Doomscrolling Before Bed

Checking your phone “one last time” at 11 PM…

Then suddenly it’s 1:30 AM, and you’ve watched 47 TikToks

about conspiracy theories.

Your sleep is trash. Your morning is ruined.

Your day starts behind.

If you can’t stay away from your phone, set this new rule.

New Rule: Phone stays in another room at 10 PM.

No exceptions. Get an actual alarm clock. Yes, they still exist.

5. Goals That Aren’t Even Yours

Be honest. How many of your goals are just

what you think you’re SUPPOSED to want?

  • The fancy job your parents want?
  • The body Instagram says you need?
  • The lifestyle your friends expect?

Delete goals that don’t make your eyes light up

when you think about them.

Sit with yourself quietly and contemplate every idea.

Meditate in complete silence

and let your mind reveal to you what truly matters to you.

You don’t discover your real goal by asking a friend

or family member; you ask yourself.

6. Waiting for the “Perfect Time”

There’s never a perfect time to:

  • Start that business.
  • Have that conversation.
  • Make that change.
  • Take that risk.

“Perfect” is code for scared.

The people winning right now?

They started messy.

They figured it out along the way. Stop waiting. Start ugly.

Just start; you will figure things out later.

Final Thoughts

Deleting these won’t magically fix your life.

But carrying them into another year guarantees

you’ll be having this same conversation in 12 months.

Choose differently.
