10 Reasons Narcissists Cheat (and Feel Justified)

Being cheated on is an extremely painful experience,

but when cheated on by a narcissist,

the pain and confusion can be even more intense.

A narcissist’s self-centered nature and lack of empathy allow them

to harm others without the guilt that typically causes people

to reflect, take responsibility, or consider the impact

and consequences of their actions.

As a result, narcissists tend to cheat repeatedly

and without remorse.

Victims of a narcissistic partner may experience

anger, sadness, confusion, and betrayal, alongside feeling used,

duped, and taken advantage of.

It is also common to question one’s own judgment

after seeing through the “FOG”—an acronym representing fear,

obligation, and guilt,

which narcissists manipulate to maintain control.

While research indicates that over 25%

of married couples experience infidelity,

narcissism is linked to an even higher likelihood of cheating.

1. Craving Attention and Admiration

Narcissists constantly live for admiration and validation.

Infidelity provides them with an additional ego boost

that reinforces their false fantasy self-image.

Cheating offers new sources of narcissistic supply to sustain their ego

and illusions, providing temporary satisfaction.

2. Reinforcing a Sense of Control

Cheating reinforces a narcissist’s belief that they are

in complete control and above the rules.

They believe they can do whatever they want

with whomever they want without facing consequences.

Even if caught red-handed, they feel confident in their ability

to manipulate the situation, talk their way out of trouble,

and convince their partner to remain in the relationship.

3. Struggling with Intimacy and Emotional Connection

Because narcissists lack empathy and focus strictly

on their own needs, perceptions, and interpretations,

they possess a shallow emotional range.

They are incapable of opening up or expressing feelings

in healthy ways, leaving them unable to create deep

or fulfilling emotional connections.

This inability creates a chronic sense of internal emptiness.

When narcissists realize their partner cannot fill this void,

they often seek external affairs to fill the gap,

blaming their partner for failing to meet their needs

while lacking awareness that they themselves are the problem.

4. Easily Becoming Bored and Seeking Stimulation

Narcissists experience frequent boredom and restlessness,

requiring high levels of stimulation.

The excitement and novelty of finding new supply give them

an emotional high and relieve their boredom.

However, once the initial rush and thrill wear off,

they treat new partners like discarded toys

and seek stimulation elsewhere.

5. Superiority and Entitlement

Driven by feelings of superiority and entitlement,

narcissists believe they are special and deserve the best

of everything, including romantic partners.

They may cheat to demonstrate their desirability

and prove they can acquire someone better.

When encountering an attractive or successful individual,

they view them as an ideal fantasy partner

rather than a real person with flaws.

If they still require access to their existing partner’s resources

or services, they will cheat rather

than discard them immediately.

Eventually, reality shatters the illusion of the new partner,

restarting their search for an impossible ideal.

6. Maintaining Domination Over the Partner

Cheating serves as a tool for narcissists to maintain perceived power

and dominance over their relationship.

Knowing that they can deceive their partner, keep secrets,

and avoid detection or consequences satisfies

their need for control and authority.

7. Punishing the Partner and Seeking Revenge

Narcissists frequently use cheating as a form of punishment

or revenge for perceived slights.

Because they feel entitled to constant attention and admiration,

normal partner behaviors—such as spending time with friends

or practicing self-care—can be interpreted as insults

or unfair treatment.

They rationalize cheating as a justified response

to make things fair and punish their partner.

8. Protecting Themselves From Rejection and Solitude

At their core, narcissists are deeply insecure

and deathly afraid of exposure and rejection.

Their lives revolve around projecting a confident, worthy persona.

To protect themselves from ever being left alone,

they maintain multiple backup options and extra partners

as a safety net in case their primary relationship ends.

9. Exerting Freedom and Autonomy

Some narcissists cheat simply to demonstrate

their perceived independence and freedom.

By engaging in affairs, they attempt to prove to themselves

and others that they are free to do as they please without restriction.

10. Lacking Empathy and Downplaying Infidelity

Lacking empathy makes it difficult for narcissists

to place themselves in another person’s shoes

or understand the emotional pain caused by their actions.

Consequently, they view infidelity as a minor

or inconsequential transgression.

When caught, they expect their partner to move on quickly,

refusing to take responsibility, apologize, or change their behavior.

Understanding Infidelity Beyond Narcissism

Not all narcissists cheat, nor are all individuals

who cheat narcissists.

Infidelity can also occur due to accumulated resentment,

communication breakdowns,

and unfulfilled needs within a relationship.

Addressing emotional disconnect or relationship dissatisfaction

through professional therapy can help couples reconnect, reset,

or part ways while maintaining integrity and personal values.
